G-20 is the annual Summit where the Group of twenty (G-20) Finance Ministers and Foreign Minister of the twenty major economies of the world come together to discuss key issues in the global economy. The G-20 is a premier forum for our international economic development that promotes open and constructive discussion between industrial and emerging-market countries on key issues related to global economic stability.

Manthan’ – organized in association with Young Indians (Yi),CII is an attempt to simulate the ‘G-20’, in order to harness the power of ideas of the youth of this country to find solutions to some of the most pressing global problems of today. The entire event is based on a format very similar to the actual G-20 summit, providing a realistic experience to the participants.

Event Format

Round 1: Online (Screening)

  • Each team is expected to write a ‘Position paper’ on the theme:
    ‘Global Debt Crisis: The World on Stranger Tides’.
    For the guidelines and evaluation criteria, please refer to the Downloads section
  • A total of 20 teams will be shortlisted to participate in Round 2, at the IIT Bombay campus

Round 2: On Campus (Main Event)

  • The shortlisted teams will be randomly allotted countries of the G-20, which they would represent in the Manthan Summit. Teams will get to know their country at the time when the list of shortlisted teams will be released. It is expected that you begin your research on that country before you attend the summit
  • Over a day event participants will engage in discussions(on pre-disclosed themes), knowledge dissemination sessions & distinguished speaker sessions which will leave an indelible impression on those who participate
  • Due to certain logistics issues, the discussions that were to be conducted over 3 days, would now take place on a single day. So be prepared for the power puffed day ahead

Important Note: The main event has been compressed to one day. It would be conducted on Oct 15, 2011.

 

Rules

  • Participants from each college need to form a team of 3 to 4 members:
    1. Head of state
    2. Finance minister
    3. Foreign Minister
    4. Researcher (optional)
  • The Head of State, Finance Minister &Foreign Minister would have to come down to the IIT Bombay campus for the actual discussion rounds scheduled on Oct 14-16th. The Researcher ( from an off campus location) is for assisting the other three in carrying out the research work needed to build sufficient awareness on contemporary macroeconomic & globally relevant key issues that will be discussed here.
  • All the members should be belonging to the same institute in each team
  • An individual can be part of only one team
  • Although multiple teams from the same college may register themselves and submit the position paper, only one team per college will be amongst the final G-20 teams.
  • All the teams need to be registered in order to play the online round
  • The Organizing team reserves the right to modify the terms and dates of the event
  • The decision of the judges would be final and binding

Important Note: Submit your Position Paper at manthan@sjmsom.in . The Subject of mail and the name of the word file should be in the following convention: Manthan_[Team Name]_[College Name].
